IEEE and Thai Communications History & Milestones: 2011
Preface
“
Free access telecommunications portal for knowledge-based society: Project IV”
Since the opening of systematic telecommunication era with the past “Optical Telephony” invented by Claude Chappe, its operation was started in France in 1794
as the first human communications device. Consequently, telecommunication was then developed numerously appeared in a plenty of types and technologies for more than
two centuries. Moreover, it has been playing a very important role in human life. It is also evidenced and recorded as a fast growing subject with numerous discovered
technologies. Furthermore, utilization of its results has been found throughout the globe and beyond.
On the other side of the world, Thai telecommunication era was established when the first official electric telegraphy was adopted. Evidently, the initial communication
was started under the reign of the King Rama V (1875). Prior to the foundation of Thai telecommunication, its earlier history was based on investigated annals, memo,
and others, and communication was generally done though contemporary transportations.
With the impression to those human cultural development based on the growth of telecommunication systems, this pictorial book dedicates to represent related histories
between the world’s communication history and those coincided stories of Thailand. Inspiringly, their milestones with related pictures from the history are styled in
a form of chronological time lines enhanced with attractive artworks, pictures, and photos should appeal to non-technical users as well.
Donation of books (and CD) is mostly to schools, academic institutes, and main libraries around the country. It is expected that this easy access-book/ media will be
a stimulating source of basic telecommunications engineering knowledge and its development, and will increase the technological literacy of Thai students/ people.
Eventually, this work is just an initial step, not yet or will never complete, because the event today is then the history of the future. Thus, we will continuously
move in both directions of returning to investigate and to collect old and older time materials, and also walking ahead to record the present events as for the future use.
Moreover the IEEE Global History Network (GHN) on the internet showing as the premier global record for preserving and interpreting the history of technological innovation
and make that history available to the public, this GHN site is then a well-established model to fulfill above objectives for the Thai version. Similarly, this project has been
following the GHN as it needs to be a sister source on the web.
The organization of this project is with the IEEE Communications Society Thailand chapter in cooperation with the Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, and
Information Technology association of Thailand (ECTI-Telecom). Co-organizers include 1) the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC)/ NSTDA
and 2) the National Archives of Thailand. The kick-off step was supported by IEEE Foundation, and later, additional supports were from local sponsors. Furthermore,
copyright pictures from “A Brief History of Communications (2002)” were granted by IEEE ComSoc combining with many others from local historical sources.
Thanks to all.
Once again, we would like to thank project advisors, Suthat Yoksan, Narong Yoothanom, Sethaporn Cusripituck, Vicharn Panich, and Kosol Petchsuwan. Their endless
contributions to Thai communities have been generally observing nationwide, appeared as those real milestones on roads throughout the country. Their generous and
helpful also cover to this project as well. Finally, to express the appreciation of completing this initial edition, it is indebted to all administrative support. This is
another time to acknowledge staffs & interns of the optical and quantum communications laboratory (OQC)/ ICCRU/ NECTEC/ NSTDA. Thank you.
